STORY OF AN ARTIST
Lines that move, sway and drip across the page, torn papers pasted to a printed pattern, shapes and stamped designs are my creative joy. Layers of vibrant color, free flowing marks, thick gels, and heavy texture, excite, exhilarate and inspire me. At the same time the process puts me in a meditative state. Each piece is an expression of an inner reflection and my personal transformation as an artist.
I am fascinated with manipulating material in my paintings. A ceramic artist for many years, I love the textural quality of paintings. Bits of ribbed cardboard, old lace from my heirloom box, patterned wallpaper, ancient books, exotic Japanese papers, fantastic fabrics, and modelling paste squeezed through stencils add collage elements to the structure on the canvas. Personal symbols and mark making, calligraphy, writing with oil pastels and ink, form a background that supports the addition of numerous layers. Patterns sculpted from sponge rollers and applied to the textured base add visual interest to the canvas. Vibrant color in transparent layers of fluid acrylic reflect images in luminous color. Heavy paint is carved into, pulled, scraped and stretched across textures with a variety of tools. Drips, splashes, dots, lines and shapes are connected with gels and pastes and form rhythmic patterns connecting the design elements.
I am entering a new phase with my painting as it is becoming more expressive, meditative and intuitive. I am allowing myself the freedom to explore the many possibilities of this fascinating acrylic medium. The creative process is all Important as lines move, mix and mingle and are overlapped by organic shapes.
I visualize form in layers and create new shapes from initial elements of prints, personal calligraphy, transparent, translucent, and thick paints applied with broad brushes, scrapers and a variety of tools. By exploring and unfolding to the many possibilities of acrylic painting, my creative journey is expanding in an inspirational and personal manner.
